Stop Overthinking And Build A Business You Love

If you have ever sat at your desk with a notebook full of ideas but no clear step forward, you know how heavy overthinking can feel. Many of us as Christian women get caught in the swirl of “shoulds.” We think we need to copy someone else’s business model, follow every expert’s advice, or get everything perfect before we begin.

But overthinking does more than delay action. It steals your energy, creates unnecessary guilt, and holds back the very work God has called you to do. What you really need is a way to move forward with clarity, courage, and small steps that actually fit your life.

That is why Laurie and I shared this conversation. We know the pain of spinning in circles, and we know the freedom that comes when you start to release perfection and take action. Together we laid out a path with practical steps, rooted in both faith and experience, to help you break free from overthinking.

Steps to Stop Overthinking and Build a Purposeful Business

The journey out of overthinking is not about hustling harder. It is about learning to pause, listen, and take steps that are simple, faithful, and fit who God made you to be. Here are the five key shifts that make all the difference.

1. Get Clear on What You Actually Want

The first step to breaking free from overthinking is clarity. So many times we follow someone else’s version of success, whether it is a step-by-step system from a course or a business model that looks good on paper but does not fit who we are.

Laurie talked about how tempting it is to copy experts and then feel guilty when you cannot follow their path exactly. I shared how I had to “try on” different business models like outfits, paying attention to what felt right for my values and what actually resonated with my audience.

Clarity is not just about business strategy. It is about the life you want. Do you want consistent structure or more variety? Do you want your days full of client calls, or do you prefer writing and creating in quiet? When you know what matters most to you, you stop building for someone else’s dream and start shaping a business that truly fits.

When you get clear, you not only gain direction, you also regain your peace.

2. Take One Small Step in the Next 24 Hours

Once you know what you want, the second step is to take action. Not a five-year plan, not a perfect launch strategy, just one small step you can take in the next day.

I shared how this “one small change” principle has guided my life, from health to finances to ministry. It works because it cuts through paralysis. Laurie added how simple actions, like making one phone call or choosing a book cover, kept her moving forward even when the bigger project felt overwhelming.

Small steps get you out of your head. They remind you that progress happens in motion, not in endless planning. It might be hitting publish on a blog post, sending an email, or testing one product idea.

Choosing one small step today is often the difference between staying stuck and finally gaining momentum.

3. Choose Progress, Not Perfection

Perfectionism is one of the sneakiest forms of overthinking. We tell ourselves the website colors are not quite right, the video is not professional enough, or the devotional needs one more round of edits. And while we wait, opportunities slip by.

Laurie and I both shared personal stories here. I held back on publishing my first devotional for months until I finally realized it just needed to go out. It was not perfect, but it changed lives and still sells today. Laurie remembered her first website with bright colors she later changed completely. At the time she hesitated, but once it went live, her business grew.

The truth is, you will get so much further by making progress than by waiting for perfection. Every time you act, you learn. And that learning is what builds a strong business that lasts.

When you choose progress over perfection, you stop waiting for approval and start building with courage.

4. Don’t Try to Build Alone

You know how overthinking just gets worse when you are alone with your thoughts? One of the most freeing parts of our journey has been walking with others who encourage, challenge, and remind us of truth.

Laurie shared how she finds clarity and motivation by talking with people, whether on a call, in a group, or through feedback sessions. I find that accountability helps me follow through instead of staying stuck in plans.

That is why we launched our Smart, Soulful Business Facebook community. It is a place where you can ask questions, get encouragement, and share small wins. Sometimes the difference between spinning in your head and moving forward is simply having someone to say, “I get it, and you can do this.”

Building in community does more than help you get unstuck. It makes the journey joyful, sustainable, and far less lonely.

5. Keep God at the Center of It All

Finally, we cannot talk about a purposeful business without faith. Laurie and I believe deeply that rhythms of prayer, rest, and spiritual grounding are not extras but essentials. Without them, even a profitable business can feel empty.

We reminded each other that God never asked us to burn out or sacrifice everything now just for the hope of success later. Instead, He calls us to build in a way that honors both our calling and our limits. These faith rhythms are what help us say no to distractions, yes to what matters, and keep moving forward when fear or overthinking creep back in.

This is not about adding more pressure. It is about creating space for God to guide your work so your business grows with both purpose and peace.

Your Next Step Forward

Overthinking will always whisper. It will tell you to wait, to plan more, to copy someone else, or to make it perfect first. But you do not have to listen.

When you get clear on what you want, take one small step, choose progress over perfection, lean on community, and keep God at the center, you create a business that not only grows but also fits your life and honors Him.

So let me ask you: what is one step you can take in the next 24 hours? Write it down. Share it with a friend. Pray over it. And then do it.

Because building a business you love starts not with overthinking but with moving forward, one faithful step at a time.
