Why Hiring A Coach Feels Risky (And Why That’s Wise)

Let me be honest with you about something. Hiring a business coach still makes me nervous, and I am really slow to pay a lot of money to anybody.

Coaches and consultants tend to be a lot of money. And I am a researcher. I read websites and sales pages and reviews and testimonials. I watch how people interact with others on social media. It takes a lot for me to trust someone with a big investment.

Laurie is the same way, even though we come at it differently. We have both been on either side of this fence. We have had investments that changed everything. We have also had ones that cost us thousands and taught us hard lessons.

So when you feel that knot in your stomach before hiring a business coach, I want you to know something. That feeling is not weakness. It is wisdom.

Today I want to talk about why hiring help feels so risky, why that hesitation is actually a gift, and how to move forward without letting fear make the decision for you.

The Questions That Keep Us Stuck

You know the questions. Laurie named them, and we have all asked them.

What If I Waste The Money?

It is so much. And it is not just money. It is time. It is momentum. It is confidence.

What If I Choose Wrong?

Every one of our businesses is unique. Yours is unique. Mine is unique. Laurie’s is unique because her main business is small churches. The things that are most important to us are different, and our personalities are different.

What If They Do Not Really Get What I Am Doing?

This is the one that keeps us up at night. Because if they do not get it, we are not just out money. We are out the chance to grow the way we hoped.

So the fear makes sense. If you hire the wrong person, you are not just out money. You are out time. You are out momentum. You are out confidence.

That is a real risk. And it is worth taking seriously.

Why Most Women Do Not Take The Leap

Here is what Laurie said that stopped me.

“A lot of people don’t hire coaches or consultants at all. They think about it, but they don’t always take the leap, not because they don’t want help, but because it feels risky.”

That is the truth, isn’t it?

It is not that we do not want help. We know we need it. We know we cannot figure everything out on our own.

But the risk feels bigger than the reward. So we stay stuck. We keep googling. We keep reading free content. We keep telling ourselves we will hire someone when we are more ready.

And the years go by.

The Hesitation Is Actually Wise

Here is where I want to reframe this for you.

That pause you feel? That gut check? It is not fear holding you back. It is discernment.

Laurie said it so well. “The hesitation, or sometimes even the fear we get, is actually really wise. Those pauses, those gut checks.”

Think about that. The same instinct that makes you hesitate is the same instinct that will help you spot the wrong fit. You are not broken for feeling cautious. You are paying attention.

And honestly? We have been burned before. Laurie and I have both hired people who talked a big game but did not actually see us, our leadership style, or what makes our businesses unique.

Laurie paid ten thousand dollars to a guy who was supposed to fix her email systems. He never fulfilled what he said he would do. He literally ghosted her three-quarters of the way through.

She has also hired someone who flat-out lied to her about what he would deliver.

So when you feel that hesitation, you are not imagining things. You have probably seen enough to know that the wrong fit is real.

But The Right Help Changes Everything

I do not want to leave you in the fear. Because the opposite is also true.

Investing in outside help, hands down, if you invest in the right outside help, it is going to save you years. Laurie says that, and I do not think she is exaggerating.

The right expert can shave years off the learning curve. They can give you clarity. They can hand you the expertise you did not even know you needed. And they can help you grow without losing your values or your voice.

I have lived this. The first big investment I ever made was an SEO course from a guy named Scratch. I had spent a long time researching and talking myself into buying it. And it changed the way I ran my website. He was simple and clear. He gave actual examples. So many other experts were being so vague that I could not see what I was doing wrong.

That course was worth every dollar. And I have earned so much because of what I learned there.

Laurie has her own version of that story with Summit in a Box. It completely changed her business. It accelerated everything. Her email lists went through the roof. And she recommends it to everyone because she has seen what the right investment can do.

The right investment can change everything. But only if it is the right one.

The Truth About Hiring A Business Coach

So here is what I want you to hold in both hands.

Yes, hiring a business coach is risky. That is honest.

Yes, you might choose wrong. That is real.

Yes, it might cost you money you cannot easily get back. That is true.

But the alternative is also risky. Staying stuck is risky. Trying to figure everything out alone is risky. Waiting until you feel completely ready is risky, because that day never comes.

The question is not whether you will take a risk. The question is which risk you are willing to take.

What To Do With The Fear

You do not have to ignore the fear. You do not have to push past it.

You just have to let it do its job.

Let the fear make you careful. Let it make you ask questions. Let it make you research and watch and wait until you have peace.

But do not let it make the decision for you. Because fear was never meant to lead.

Laurie said something near the end of our conversation that I keep coming back to. She said we cannot make decisions on fear, even if we are scared.

That is the whole thing, isn’t it? You are allowed to be scared. You are not allowed to let the fear choose for you.

So do the research. Ask the questions. Watch how they treat people. And then decide from a place of peace, not panic.

Because the decision you make from peace will always be better than the one you make from fear.

One Step You Can Take Today

If you are circling the idea of hiring a business coach and you feel stuck, here is one small thing.

Write down the fear. Name it. What exactly are you afraid of?

Is it wasting money? Choosing wrong? Being seen as foolish? Not being understood?

Once you name it, you can bring it to God. You can bring it to a trusted friend. You can bring it to the decision itself.

Because the fear is not the enemy. The fear is information. And when you listen to it instead of obeying it, you make better decisions.

You are not being difficult. You are being wise.

And that is a good place to start.
